Usability of a Product

By Rachel Won / 22 Jul 2019 / Tags: Design Insights

Recently, I need to send out a mail to one of my clients. I went to Diaso to buy a $2 pack of envelopes.

When I was about to mail out my documents, I realise that the Diaso envelope is way too short, 3cm shorter than usual size, they short change the flap area, unbelievable! Why would they come out with a B5 Size envelope, where the paper width is A4? This is puzzling to me.

Even producing a simple functional envelope, either the designer is inexperienced or the printing manufacturer wants to short change the paper size.

I had no choice but to go to popular to buy the standard DL size envelope that my A4 documents fit nicely into it. It comes with self-adhesive sticker at the flap. I just need pay for a $1.

The bad design has caused me more. Instead I should be paying $1 but I have to pay $3 now. On top of that, I wasted 30 mins of my time to settle this issue.

These are the small details and the size does matter, we as designers have to take care of. If your product/services are so difficult to use. Fail its purpose as a practical product. No one will use it or probably use it once and only time. This is what I called Bad UX Design.

There’s a purpose why DL size is created for the letters/documents. Don’t try to reinvent the will. Sometimes as a designer, we don’t have to be “too creative”, but need to be sensitive enough towards users’ needs.

So what am I doing to do to this packet of not user friendly envelopes now?
